Its Interesting

Inspired by a Conversation with Steve Baird

As Jack got home from work he had the weight of the world on his shoulders. He did everything slowly. Opening doors, getting changed grabbing a beer. His wife Jill knew straight away that Jack wasn't his normal self, but she knew best not to question him. Jack would eventually tell her what was wrong, but if she pestered him he would just get annoyed.

Eventually, over dinner, Jack revealed that he was not himself due to some changes that he and Jill may need to make.

"The bloody RBA raised the interest rates again today" Jack said. "Combine this with the price of fuel these days, and we cant live the way we are at the moment"

Jill didn't see this as a major drama, but knew she better agree with Jack.

"Well, I can stop going to Pilates classes, that will save us some money. And you could stop buying as much beer as you currently do" Jill said.

"It needs to be something more than that. Giving up lots of small things wont matter. We need to consider not having health insurance and possibly even stop giving to the charities we do. I just think we the increased cost of living we cant afford those things"

This all made Jill feel very uneasy so she decided to change the subject.

"Did you hear about those guys trapped in a mine in Tasmania"

Meanwhile, in Tasmania, celebrations had begun is the two men, trapped in a mine for over 10 days were rescued.

As family, friends, colleagues, paramedics and the media swarmed the men, the two felt nothing but relief to be free and to stretch their legs again. To breathe fresh air and speak to other people.

They started told the events of the past 10 days to people with itching ears, it dawned on them they had little idea of what had happened in the world outside the mine. So they asked the question.

A reporter down the front responded "I guess the major story is the RBA increased interest rates again".

"Is that all" The men thought to themselves.

Lets get some perspective.

  • Jim,
Love it - and cleverly written. Its funny how much AM radio can wear doon the soul with endless whining! It is great to be reminded we are part of something bigger...
