Pirates "Arrrrrrgh" Breaking Records.

This weekend saw Disney launch their new movie, "Pirates of the Caribbean : Dead Mans Chest" across the globe.

Pirates simply smashed all box office records in the U.S over the weekend, grabbing the biggest grossing weekend EVER. Pirates grabbed a massive $132Million in tickets sales over the weekend, easily beating out previous champ, Spiderman 2 ($114.8M).

Not to many records remained in tact after the weekend. Pirates grabbed the largest single day opening on Friday with $55.5M beating out Star Wars:Episode III ($50M) and smashed Disney's previous high set by the Incredibles ($70.5M).

Australia had a strong debut with an estimated $8.2M, but no record breaking there.
So, did you see it? And what did you think?

I saw it, and I (embarrassingly) was a little confused. I seemed to be the only person who thought so. The plot seemed overly complicated for what it was trying to achieve. However, I still enjoyed it, and part of me just wanted a understand the beauty of the story.

So last night I watched the first one again. Its worth doing. Lots of references to Davy Jones. Also, Jack Sparrow, sorry, CAPTAIN Jack Sparrow, using "the compass".

So again: have you seen it? Did you like it?

I need to go see it again.

Jim

p.s Superman Returns is also worth checking out.

  • Apologies. The $8.2M estimated for Australia, was in American dollars.

Its over $11M in AUD which puts it in the top 5 openings ever in Australia.

  • Jim - I am yet to see the latest pirates - but i did watch the first one again (like the 15th time maybe?! haha) on friday night and cannot wait til i see the second! Bring it on i say!

Now according to my trusty page of pirate talk i have sitting right here besdie me (thanks for treestump theme nite prep) Davy Jones is all about talk for death - 'To see someone to Davy Jones' is to threaten to kill them; Davy Jones' locker is the place at the bottom of the ocean that holds dead sailors and pirates...and the list goes on...
...just a bit of trivia for you there...

will let you know thoughts on the film when i finally get to see it though! :)

  • Seen it - liked it. I agree with you on the over ly complicated sections....but I'm a sucker for any decent sequel that references the movie before it.

  • grr stupid sister having virtually exactly the same opinions as me, thus stealing my insightfulness.
i liked it. i don't think it was ever going to be as good as the first one, but i did thoroughly enjoy it nonetheless. agreeing with the overcomplicatedness at times, cos they were obviously trying to fill in bits of the story that had happened between the 2 films, and sometimes you just went, hang on, what happened where? who's that guy? what happened to this chick? huh?
for those of you who haven't seen it yet go watch the first one before you do, cos then you'll pick up on some fun references - hoorah for rum.

  • Jim,
Ok, finally saw it today! yay!
And I did like it! I personally didnt think it was too confusing, but i can see why u say it was more complicated than it needed to be.
Anyway, not as good as the first one, but still some great sets, beautiful beaches, and another impressive performance by the one and only Johnny Depp!
    Speak soon brother,
